"Jesus is the true Light of the World, and we celebrate with candlelight.” - Meredith Gould, The Catholic Home: Celebrations and Traditions for Holidays, Feast Days, and Every Day
Februay 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation, often called Candlemas, which commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the presentation of Christ in the temple, which took place 40 days after his birth as Jewish law required. To celebrate this feast, traditionally you light candles in your homes to recognize that Jesus is the “light of revelation to the Gentiles” (Luke 2:32). These words were spoken by Simeon at Jesus' Presentation at the Temple. On Candlemas, priests traditionally bless candles before or at the beginning of Mass. As a family, this evening light your candles and say this prayer below.
Catholic Collect for The Feast of the Presentation All-powerful Father, Christ Your Son
became man for us and was presented in the temple.
May he free our hearts from sin and bring us into your presence.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Your Son who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit
one God forever and ever.
“Jesus identified himself as the Light of the World, but then called us to be the light. The Presentation helps us to remember that we share in the continuation of his mission.”
- Father Roger Landry, pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church in New Bedford, MA
